Why do I feel like a Yo-Yo.

A lot of people I talk to tell me they can't understand why they don't lose any weight, even though they have decreased their caloric intake in major ways. They ask me why they aren't losing as fast as they thought they would and then when they rev their calories back to a normal level the pounds pack back on quickly, thus the term Yo-Yo diets.

This diagram explains this phenomenon very well. When you drastically cut your calories, the body goes into a famine response and begins burning muscle. As we lose muscle, our metabolism slows, so that as soon as we start to eat some calories the body begins packing it back on. (I know this from experience as well as the research that tells me so.)

So, now you know how the cycle works and you can begin to break that cycle and reach for the finish line!
